Future plans for The Hihiaua Cultural Centre include development of a performance venue for Maori performing arts, flexible spaces for events of all types, exhibitions, celebrations, and most importantly manaakitanga.

Resource consent has already been granted for development of an iconic building on the
site and $8million of funding has been secured from the Whangarei District Council and the
Provincial Growth Fund. Further fund raising is underway and trustees continue to ensure
plans are fit for purpose while Aotearoa and the World navigates a way through the global
pandemic.
Stage 2 will include an indoor/outdoor stage designed specifically, but not exclusively, to
cater for kapa haka so audiences large and small can engage in safety and comfort and
performers can reach even higher levels of performance excellence. Other spaces will be
available for exhibitions, conferences, wananga, awards dinners and various forms of social
and cultural gatherings.
